5-0 FOR SEAHAWKS COLTS TEAM

A healthier and better prepared Sutherland Seahawks Colts team defeated the Sydney University Cubs 38-8 at Neptune Park Revesby on saturday, a significant improvement over the prior meeting.

The Seahawks offense scored 5 touchdowns with another being added on a punt return that was blocked.

Running back Haoping Tang scored the first of his 2 touchdowns from 6 yards out, the ground game gained 168 yards in the game against a Cubs' defense that was determined to play tight cover 0 all game, load the box and demand deep throws.

Receiver Justin Whiting scored his 6th receiving touchdown of the year, finding space in the middle of the field to break the tight coverage and put the Seahawks ahead 12-0. Safety Josh Hayward's interception and 23 yard return put the offence in excellent field position. The Seahawks made huge improvements in the kicking, coverage and return game compared to the previous contest between the 2 teams. 10 of the Cubs' 11 possessions started inside their own half; 3 of them inside their own 20.

Always know where the endzone is

Jackson Young played on both sides of the ball, scoring a touchdown, a 2 point PAT, making 4 tackles, breaking up a pass and blocking a punt. His 25 yard catch and run typified a ferocious physical attitude that the Seahawks have worked on developing in its Colts program.

Tang's second touchdown, this time from 33 yards out, came from a concerted blocking effort against a loaded box by the Cubs which lasted the whole game. Nothing is more pleasing than running the ball right down the throat of an opponent and the Seahawks offense did this right behind John Englezos in his first game at right guard.

It wasn't all on the the offense. The defense made key plays to both thwart Cubs possessions and set up the offense for scores in their own right. Andrew Di Cesare made an important sack that dented a Cubs possession in Seahawks territory.

Daniel Besz hadn't had a lot of help from his receivers early on, several catchable balls were dropped in the tight man coverage that the Cubs were attempting. His ability to extend the play and find rookie receiver Nick Predkowski for his first ever touchdown though was one of the plays of the game.

Safety Alex Mellor finished off the game and the scoring with a punt return touchdown. After Jackson young partially blocked the punt, Mellor quickly regathered the short gain and turned it into 6 points.

ROUND TWO OF JUNIOR COMPETITION SETS UP BIG WEEK THREE.

With 15 second remaining, down 39-38, QB Max O'Shea of the Golden Phoenix found Daniel MacDonald for a huge first down in White Lions territory.

With 5 second remaining, an O'Shea to Christian Calabria touchdown (his 4th for the game) as time expired put the Golden Phoenix on top 44-39 for the win. Coach Mitchell Wiseman's team is now 2-0 for the season and they will play the other 2-0 team so far, the Blue Ankle Breakers.

The White Lions made huge strides over Week #1, Daniel ("DJ") Mauga-Hall also had 4 touchdowns himself after the team could only manage 15 total points in their first game of the season.

In the second game, the Ankle Breakers played the Hurricanes, the ability of the Ankle Breakers to distribute the ball to 4 different scorers showed how well they have picked up their offensive systems. Harry Clarke scored twice then added 3 PAT's whilst for the Hurricanes, Ned Rickard's 3 scores keep them in the hunt throughout. The 38-22 final score showed that both team's can score points and move the ball, Coach Daniel Besz's offense leads the competition in scoring but most importantly has conceded the fewest points.

Next week the Hurricanes (0-2) play the White Lions (0-2) whilst the Golden Phoenix (2-0) plus the Ankle Breakers (2-0).

#1 Ankle Breakers 2-0, 73 points for/36 against.
#2 Golden Phoenix 2-0, 72 points for/59 against.
#3 White Lions 0-2, 53 points for/79 against.
#4 Green Hurricanes 0-2, 42 points for/66 against.

2015 JUNIOR SEASON KICKS OFF.

Whilst the club's Colts team had the week off, the 2015 Junior 5 man season began on friday night at Sutherland.

The teams have been practicing for the past 6 weeks, many new players playing in their first career games.

Coach Daniel Besz's Blue Ankle Breakers were victorious 35-14 over the White Lions. Ryhs Downs scored 3 touchdowns for the Ankle Breakers, one of 2014's returning players, QB Spencer Christlo hooking up with Downs on all 3 scores.

The Hurricanes scored all their 20 points in the 2nd half.

In the other game, the Golden Phoenix of Coach Mitchell Wiseman held out the Green Hurricanes in the second half after amassing all of their 28 points in the first half; 28-20 the final score. QB Maximus O'Shea started his season off with several passing touchdowns.

Games will continue each Friday through to the Championship game on December 18th. Next week the Ankle Breakers play the Hurricanes and the White Lions play the Golden Phoenix. Both games start at 6.40pm.

COLTS TEAM NOW 4-0.

An uninspiring and frustrating 4th win for the 2015 season resulted on saturday from the Game Four contest with Sydney Uni Cubs; 18-12 being the closest game so far.

Several long penalties as well as losing Qb Daniel Besz to injury for a portion of the game made for a lackluster result compared to the rest of the 2015 season to date.

Cornerback Dylan Dinale made several great plays to go with his 6 tackles; an intercept return for touchdown, his second of the year, and then a forced fumble and return deep into the redzone that set up a score that iced the game for the Seahawks.

Haoping Tang and Justin Whiting were the main movers on the offense, covering for the absence of regular Tight End Jake Wedesweiler and Guard Maclaren Mrkic

Frustratingly, the team will again have 2 weeks off before a return game against Sydney Uni on Oct 31st at Neptune Oval Revesby 5pm.

SEAHAWKS COACHES TOUR OF ALL THINGS TEXAS FOOTBALL.

For a second consecutive year, coaches from our club toured the state of Texas and took in all that is to offer on the gridiron and the concentric circles around it that make up the world of football in that state.

In 2015 four Sutherland Seahawk coaches, Peter Upham, Christos Lambropoulos, Jason Lambropoulos and Chris Barry toured Baylor University, Texas A&M University, Temple High School and Cedar Hill High School, taking in 6 games and countless practices as well as watching film and meeting with coaching staffs.

There aren't many high schools in Australia that have facilities like Temple High school; these include a Jumbotron.

Baylor University has been an obvious magnet for our club's attention with two ex-players on the roster there. Blake and Sean Muir, brothers from Sutherland, have been at Baylor since 2013, Blake is currently the starting Left Guard for a team that is ranked at #3 in the nation so far in 2015.

The trip was largely oriented around seeing Baylor play two games, a home game vs Rice and a neutral site game vs Texas Tech. The dates corresponded with a bye week and the Long Weekend off in Australia which allowed a gap where the coaches could travel and the remaining coaches to continue to run practice.

Blake #73 was an offensive captain for the Texas Tech game at AT&T Stadium.

Sean walks from the team bus to Baylor's McLane Stadium.
It has been a very fortuitous time for the Muir brothers to arrive at Baylor and contribute to its success. The program is experiencing its greatest ever results and has an excellent shot this year to qualify for the College Football Playoff and National Championship. Already 4-0 and ranked #3 for 2015 so far, we will continue to watch every game. A reminder that a blog diary is kept on our site and can be accessed here.

Many thanks need to go to Baylor's offensive line coach Randy Clements and Head Coach Art Briles for allowing us to watch their private practices while we were there.

Texas A&M has the sort of facilities expected of a high caliber program in College football.

Baylor was not the only college program that we had a chance to visit with and watch practice. Texas A&M is in College Station and another well respected college program, even if the two schools don't like each other! Head Coach Kevin Sumlin was also very generous with allowing us to watch practice and tour their facilities.

There are elements of the offensive and defensive systems from both of those college teams that have already been incorporated at our club, and it was nice to watch, knowing the fact that we make the same points of emphasis in our drills.

Cedar Hill, like Temple, is one of the premier high school programs in Texas. The number of college prospects that come out of each school is a credit to the consistency and attention to detail of the Head Coaches (Spradlin at Temple, McGuire at Cedar Hill).

Cedar Hill's 4 starting defensive backs for example are already all committed to Division One programs. Both schools have sent players to Baylor and Texas A&M, Coach Spradlin previously was a part of Art Briles' coaching staff at the University of Houston and obviously has an excellent relationship still.

The differences between the high school/collegiate sporting model and the club sporting model in Australia is significant and a cause for consideration for all sports here, not just our own.

There is a lot to like about a system that fosters high quality sporting output as well as school and community involvement. An article discussing the differences can be seen on the club's gym website, Shire Speed and Strength.

It has been a focus of our club in the last few seasons to as much as possible mimic the best strategies of where football is done the best. It was relieving to the coaches for whom it was their first trip to Texas, that everything was as expected.

They say you can never have too many friends and I feel like we made several new friends in Texas and we'll go back in the future.
